Love this site...just wanted to share.
Interesting to see their core areas listed at the top: Design, Ethonomics?
I see they have RISD highlighted at the top as well....very intriguing, as they are have been primarily known to be much more on the "art" side of the continuum of design.

Need to dive into this to see what lies behind this tag.

BTW, anyone know if we have tried to advertise here before? Along these lines, how about Wall Street Journal...I imagine their demographics of readership is very much in line with who we (rest of America) wants to target to get work, eh?

Got up bright and early to catch a breakfast session hosted by Eastman Innovation Lab, KOR and RKS Designs. The topic was the making of KOR ONE, a reusable water bottle that has the blogs buzzing even before it's launch.

There were some promo corporate videos (with sporadic sound) from Eastman followed by a lively and candid discussion between RKS' Ravi Sawhney, KOR's Eric Barnes and the head honcho of Eastman.

Ravi talked about RKS's design process, in particular, their tried and tested Psycho-Aesthetics design strategy. Eastman introduced their BPA free plastic called Eastman Tritan. Can someone research this plastic and let me know how it fares on the green-scale?

Most interesting was Eric's perspective on his business. Eric went out on a limb and lashed out against mediocre products and the need for designing meaningful products that reduce waste. We also got a pre-production sample that has a squeaky lid, so they are working out the kinks before the product launch in October. If you want one, watch for my ebay listing of my sample (ok just kidding, you'll have to pry it from my fingers). Overall a great presentation, a very nice freebie and a super start to Thursday.

Yesterday, sunset over the lovely Teriyaki mountains surrounding the resort, as we make our way to the Convention hall for the opening session (ok, I don't know the name of the hillock).

And a photo of the opening session. We are sitting waaay back so we can see the two giant screens projecting the same thing... don't want to miss anything.

Hello world, from the lovely Arizona Biltmore Resport and Spa. This is your friendly PDT team liveblogging from the IDSA conference.
Pheonix weather is a Polar Opposite of what was promised, it's raining sporadically with thunderstorms.

SP and I arrived around 3 today at the Sky Harbor Airport and found our way to the hotel. The rental car guys took a while get us situated with the car. Anyway we are here, we had a great opening session with the awards ceremony and a party afterwards. Yes, there was an actual live DJ, turntables and all. Internet access here is a little patchy, so we'll be filling you in whenever the wind blows wifi our way.
I'll upload some photos soon. More later.

IDEA Awards- my perspective

A critical look at the IDEA awards really does throw a question over where(if anywhere) our industry is going , despite what we are lead to believe about users demanding, ‘meaningful experiences’ and manufacturers and consumers striving to reduce their carbon footprint and make the world a better place those chosen to be awarded recognition tells me that we are a long way from consumer/environment and commercial utopia with the majority of awards clearly going to efforts for execution of form, use of color and materials and incremental enhancements in usability.

While I applaud beautiful products (and there are a lot of very beautiful ones here) I do (now and then) stop and become highly conscious of our power to influence and responsibility to serve, so when a fork lift truck (damn fine one too) gets a Gold award from IDEA it clearly tells me that we are still smothered by the mentality that ‘more stuff is better’ To award a device that allows one man to safely and more efficiently load 4000lb of ‘stuff’ onto a palette and then swiftly move it from one place to another ready for distribution, sale, consumption and ultimate disposal is, in my mind totally and utterly irresponsible.

I'll do a quick rundown of my own perspective on winners in the next day or so..

Kip Hawley, the agency’s director, told me Monday that the T.S.A. would accept the new laptop cases as soon as they come on the market.

Two of the biggest luggage manufacturers — Pathfinder Luggage and Targus — say they are rushing to produce the new “checkpoint friendly” laptop cases and expect them to be available by late September or early October.

According to "recent" filings from the smartphone manufacturer, a new style of keyboard is on the table which may move your familiar key placement into a slightly more angular position. The purpose of the proposed pad is ostensibly to improve accuracy by creating a more "natural" placement for your thumbs -- though this concept might be a little more effort than required. Of course, since all kinds of crazy designs get filed with the patent office, we wouldn't put too much faith in this seeing the light of day, though it is an intriguing look into RIM's design process.

Just saw these at Target - great to see -for every product sold Memorex plant 3 trees. The entire packaging and approach seems holistically focused on sustainability too. Marketing ploy???? I am trying to find out the entire story behind them. but this is the first ime I have seen sustainability be so explicitly used up front on consumer electronics.

hmmm- it's a system - I'm always skeptical or 'buddy' products and 'systems' Essentially a liner for your pet bowl so you don't have to wait around 'til you pet has finished eating, bend over and pick up the bowl then go all the way to the sink to wash the bowl not to mention turning on the tapsm and then trek all the way back to the feeding spot and bend down once more to put it back....oh life can be hell but hey with this system you now have time to watch e-news! - I know these guys are in your sights JoelLink

I had the pleasure of hearing Sir Ken Robinson speak many years ago...a very charismatic and intelligent speaker. I listened to this last year and just found it on the TED site...a site everyone should be frequenting on a regular basis as it is...the speach is well worth the 20 mins listening time

Did anyone go this year?? - hope so, but I haven't heard any thing about it. Aving have good coverage of the ColorWatch exhibit designed by Pantone for the show highlighting their direction on color for 2008. Always wondered why these guys didn't do more in forcasting.
